At-Home Care Tips for Red and Copper Hair
Red and copper colors are beautiful, but they’re also the fastest to fade. The good news is, a few simple habits at home make a big difference in how long your color lasts.
Here’s everything I tell my red and copper clients to help keep their color fresh between appointments.
Shampooing the Right Way
Try to wash your hair 2–3 times a week, use cool or lukewarm water, and apply the shampoo on your roots. That’s where oil builds up. Let the shampoo rinse through your ends instead of scrubbing them.
Red Hair Stains
Red and copper color can stain, especially right after a fresh color. It’s totally normal.
You might see some color on:
pillowcases
white towels
light color clothing
your car’s headrest
your hands if you apply a color masque without gloves
Use dark colored towels & pillow cases. If your car has a light-colored interior, put a small towel behind your head.
Use a Color Depositing Conditioner
Maria Nila Colour Refresh is the easiest way to keep your red or copper from fading. You can use it whenever your color starts looking a little dull. The more frequently you use it, the brighter your color stays.
How to apply:
Shampoo your hair
Towel dry until damp
Put on gloves
Work in sections
Apply a generous amount
Massage it in so the pigment absorbs evenly
Leave it on 5–10 minutes
Rinse well
Shade guide:
Bright Copper → great for warm, bright coppers and lighter orange-based shades
Autumn Red → good for deeper reds, red-browns, and richer tones
If you’re unsure which one matches your hair, message me a photo in natural light and I’ll tell you which shade is best.
Red Hair + Sweat
Red hair can easily bleed when sweating, especially around the hairline. If you're working out, wear a headband and keep your hair up. This helps prevent stains on your skin or clothes
Keep the Heat Down
If you use hot tools:
Keep the temperature under 350°F
Always use a heat protectant (Kenra Blowdry Spray is great)
Try not to go over the same section too many times
Lower heat = color lasts longer.
Protect It From the Sun
The sun damages more than just your skin. If you'll be outside for a long time, use a UV-protective leave-in or keep your hair up. Constant sun exposure can make red and copper tones look washed out.
Quick Recap
Wash 2–3 times a week
Shampoo only your scalp
Cool or lukewarm water
Use a colored conditioner as needed
Watch for staining
Wear a headband when working out
Keep heat under 350°F
Use UV protection in the sun
Use these to maintain your color vibrant & minimize fading.
