How to Choose a Stylist When You Have Anxiety

If you avoid salons because they make you anxious, you're not alone. They can be overwhelming.

The sensory overload. The forced small talk. The difficulty explaining what you want. It's enough to make people go years between haircuts just to avoid the whole thing.

It doesn't have to be that way. The right stylist and environment can make a real difference.

What to Look For in a Stylist

A lot of people feel like they have to make small talk at salons. You might worry it'll seem rude if you don't, or maybe you just can't find the words in the moment.

You can say you'd rather keep things quiet. Most stylists get it. They'll pick up on your energy. If you're not chatty, they won't force it.

Choose a Private Salon Suite

Traditional salons are are overstimulating. Multiple people talking, chemical smells, music playing, everyone visible in the mirrors. It's overstimulating even on a good day.

A private salon suite is just you and your stylist. No other clients gossiping. The whole setup is less chaotic and feels more like hanging out in your friends room.

How to Prepare

Look up the salon online and check out their photos, so you know what to expect.

Bring reference photos. Write down a few things that are important, like maintaining length, service cost or if there are parts of the process that make you uncomfortable.

When you book, let them know if you're shy or deal with anxiety. We can adjust how we communicate and work with you.

Silent Appointments Are a Thing Now

Some stylists now offer appointments where conversation is kept to a minimum. It's becoming more common, especially in private settings.

At my studio in Kennewick, I offer this because I know what it’s like being anxious in unfamiliar spaces and people. Simply select ‘yes’ when booking online.

You Can Find the Right Fit

You shouldn't have to dread getting your hair done. With the right stylist and environment, it can be something you don't have to stress about.

It might take a couple tries to find the right fit, and that's fine. Look for stylists who offer a more private salon experience, and who won’t make you feel weird for being your self.

Some of us chose private suites because traditional salons are overstimulating for us too. We can just be anxious in the same room and call it a day.
