Why Your Blonde Never Matches the Photo (and How to Fix It)

By Ivan, a Blonde Hair Specialist in Kennewick, WA

I love when guests bring inspiration photos. It’s the best way to make sure we’re on the same page. But choosing the right photo, and the right service, matters more than most guests realize.

In this post I’ll show you how to pick the right inspo photo, how my booking process works so there are no surprises, and why your hair history matters more than you think.

1. Look at the Roots

When you’re picking an inspiration photo, look for someone with a natural color close to yours. Your starting point decides how your blonde will lift and how it will grow out.

Here’s a recent example. My guest got this right. Her natural base matched the photo she brought in, so I could work with her hair instead of against it.The result speaks for itself.

2. Time Is Part of the Formula

Most salons have one generic menu, something like “full highlights,” “partial highlights,” “balayage.” You select “full highlights,” but then you show up with a photo of a bright blonde, a different natural color, and three times the hair. Now your stylist has to decide: do I ask her to come back, or do I keep going and run late for my next appointment?

I built my booking around two things instead. First, your goal: DIMENSION, CONTRAST, or ULTIMATE. Then your hair density, because the amount of hair you have matters just as much as the service.

My pre-appointment form minimizes surprises and lets me mentally prepare for your service (yes really, I need to mentally prepare). If I notice any issues, I can reach out ahead of time. By the time you sit in my chair, I’m ready, whether that means more time or even the right colors.

3. Natural Doesn’t Mean Virgin

Dyeing your highlights back to your natural shade doesn’t make your hair virgin again (no judgment here). The lightened (bleached) hair is still under there. And if you colored your hair two years ago and it’s long, that color is still sitting on your ends.

If you've visited another hair salon in Tri-Cities since our last session, it's totallyokay, I forgive you. Just be honest. Knowing your full history helps us avoid surprises and plan accordingly. Sharing everything on your pre-appointment form also lets me be honest with you. your hair can’t handle the process yet, or maybe I’m not the right hairstylist.

I’ll Take It From Here

I cannot promise you a perfect replica of a Pinterest photo because your hair is entirely unique. Whether you are looking for a  sun-kissed balayage, a lived-in blonde, or a dimensional bronde, my Tri-Cities blonding services are all-inclusive (lift, gloss, styling). Let’s work together to create a blonde that works for you and your lifestyle.
